Throat Chakra ~ Expressing your Truth

Our fifth chakra, Vishuddha, is the first of the three spiritual chakras. In the area of the throat, it governs the anatomical regions of the thyroid, parathyroid, jaw, neck, mouth, tongue, and larynx. To be open and aligned in the fifth chakra is to speak, listen, and express yourself from a higher form of communication. Faith and understanding combine the essence of the Vishuddha chakra. The element corresponding to the fifth chakra is ether or space, and our sense is hearing.

Located at the center of the neck at the level of the throat, it is the passage of the energy between the lower parts of the body and the head. It’s important to remember that this chakra is multidimensional and is often represented as going out of the front of the throat, and going in the back at a slight upward angle.

The Throat chakra is associated to the pharyngeal and brachial plexi and is connected to the mouth, jaws, tongue, pharynx and palate. It’s also linked to the shoulders and the neck. The gland associated with the fifth chakra is the thyroid, which regulates the processing of energy in the body through temperature, growth, and in large parts, metabolism.

The function of the Throat chakra is driven by the principle of expression and communication. The most common Sanskrit name for the Throat chakra is “Vishudda”, which means “pure” or “purification”. This chakra is related to the element of sound. Through the throat, sound is propagated into the air and its vibration can be felt not just in our ears, but also in our whole body. It is an important instrument of communication and expression.

Behavioral characteristics of the Throat chakra

The Throat chakra is associated with the following psychological and behavioral characteristics:

  • Expression, in particular ability to express your truth, to speak out

  • Communication, whether it’s verbal or non-verbal, external or internal

  • Connection with the etheric realm, the more subtle realms of spirit and intuitive abilities

  • Propensity to create, projecting ideas and blueprints into reality

  • Realizing your vocation, purpose

  • Good sense of timing

The Throat chakra is about the expression of yourself: Your truth, purpose in life, creativity. Note that this chakra has a natural connection with the second chakra or sacral chakra, center of emotions and creativity as well. The throat chakra’s emphasis is on expressing and projecting the creativity into the world according to its perfect form or authenticity.

Another function of the throat chakra is to connect you to spirit. Because of its location, it’s often seen as the “bottleneck” of the movement of energy in the body. It sits just before the upper chakras of the head. Opening the throat chakra can greatly help align your vision with reality and release pressure that may affect the heart chakra that is located just below.

The throat chakra is associated with the etheric body, which is said to hold the blueprint or perfect template of the other dimensions of the body. It’s an important reference point to align the energy through the whole chakra system.

When the throat chakra is in imbalance

A blocked throat chakra can contribute to feelings of insecurity, timidity, and introversion. On the other end of the spectrum, an overactive throat chakra may also lead to gossiping, nonstop talking, and being verbally aggressive or mean. It can seem as though the filter between the discourse you have in your mind and what comes out of your mouth is not working, or missing entirely.

When the throat chakra has an imbalance, it can manifest as:

  • Lack of control over one’s speech; speaking too much or inappropriately;

  • Not being able to listen to others

  • Excessive fear of speaking

  • Small, imperceptible voice

  • Not being able to keep secrets, to keep your word

  • Telling lies

  • On the opposite side, a closed throat chakra might manifest as excessive secretiveness or shyness

  • Lack of connection with a vocation or purpose in life

Colour Blue Blue - is the first of the three primary colours and it is the colour of the throat chakra. Blue connects you with the Divine and it is the colour that we associate with Heaven. Blue energy is pure, soothing, calming, and healing. Just imagine yourself lying on the grass on a beautiful sunny day, looking at the blue sky. How do you feel? Peaceful. Serene. Content. Tranquil. That is the power of throat chakra colour. Blue is also at the cooler end of the spectrum, where things slow down, allowing you to take time to be still. And to listen to your own voice. To listen to the stillness within and to express what needs to be expressed. In Buddhist philosophy, blue is the colour of pure mind - the mind that is uncluttered by thought. In stillness, you can find pure mind.

Blue energy is a guiding energy, enabling you to find a sense of faith and trust. Red, orange, yellow, and green guide your attention towards movement, activity, relationships, and things that can be observed on a material plane. Blue moves your attention to the subtle vibrations that move through all of life. As you unfold the petals of your throat chakra, you find the seat of creativity. You communicate with ease and clarity. You begin to express your authentic self.

Determine Your Highest Truth

Authentic expression is not something that comes easily. There’s a delicate dance between saying what you mean and staying tactful or diplomatic. Often it’s easier to say what the other person may want to hear instead of speaking your truth. Fear of not being accepted, or judgment from the other may hinder your truthful verbal expression.

As we have worked on the lower chakras that would have helped prepare you for this level of communication. We have aligned the first and second chakras, as we assisted in overcoming our fears. Opened the third chakra to feel your personal power and have the confidence to express yourself. Knowing what’s in your heart comes when you align the fourth chakra. Then, when it comes to verbalizing your needs, desires, and opinions you’re better able to determine how to be truthful to yourself and others.

Express Your Truth If you’re used to being accommodating, rather than saying what you want, you may have to practice out loud to yourself. Affirmations are useful in making what you desire reality. Write down what you might want to express to others. Let’s suppose you’d like to ask your boss if you can work from home two days per week but you haven’t had the courage to ask. Write out the phrase you will say when you are with him. Practice it in front of your mirror. Maybe you’d like it if friends or family would call before dropping over but you’ve feared confrontation. Write down the request, practice it, and maybe include a couple of responses should she push back on your request. Speak and Listen With Compassion There are three gateways you should cross before speaking.

  1. First, ask yourself, “Is what I am about to say true?”

  2. If so, proceed to the second gateway and ask, “Is what I am about to say necessary?”

  3. If the answer is yes, go to the third gateway and ask yourself, “Is what I am about to say kind?”

Speaking your highest truth doesn’t mean you’re allowed to be hurtful or critical. The truth from your spiritual essence will come across as kind and compassionate. Listening is another aspect of the fifth chakra. The highest form of listening includes giving the other person your full attention. This means putting away electronic devices or turning them off and waiting to hear the other person completely before responding.
